Lexington firefighters extinguished a blaze Tuesday morning at a paper plant on Palumbo Drive.
Major Shaun Brown said the fire started shortly before 10 a.m., when roofers at the International Paper Co., 2575 Palumbo Drive, were doing some work with tar. Brown said the tar, which burns very hot, ignited, causing a lot of smoke. He said the crews tried to extinguish the blaze, but "once those things get started, it's really difficult."
Brown said fire crews "had a real aggressive attack" and knocked the fire down with water hoses about 10:19 a.m.
Investigators were checking the roof to make sure the fire didn't extend to the inside. Brown said it appeared that it was only a surface fire.
