The University of Kentucky has scrapped plans to charge a $15 fee next year for bicycles parked on campus, but officials said they would proceed with other elements of a program to register bikes and make cycling on campus safer and easier.
UK's Parking and Transportation Services had announced the program Tuesday. While bicycling advocates applauded the university's program, some students complained about the fee.
"Unfortunately, the fee component of the bicycle registration plan diverted the attention away from the positive aspects of the program," the university office said in a campus-wide e-mail late Friday. "As a result, PTS will continue to advocate for additional bicycle facilities and services, but will support these efforts through established revenue structures."
