Tea Party rallies to oppose spending

Two Tea Party rallies to oppose increasing government spending have been scheduled in Lexington this week.

They are among least 18 such events to be held around the state. Most of the Tea Parties will be held Wednesday, the deadline for citizens to submit their income tax returns to the government.

"People across the commonwealth and the country are frustrated with politicians promising an 'Era of Responsibility' then putting forth proposals to double the national debt," Andy Hightower, executive director of the Kentucky Club for Growth, said in a press release. "They're tired of bearing the burden of tax increases when the government can't even tell us what they're spending it on."

He said the goal of the events is to "send Frankfort and Washington the message that the same old tax-and-spend approach is not a path to prosperity."

The Kentucky Club for Growth, a non-partisan advocacy organization, issued a press release about the Tea Parties but said the events have been organized by individuals and have not been coordinated by the Club for Growth.

The first Lexington Tea Party will be from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Lexington-Fayette County Courthouse Plaza.

The other event, Bluegrass Tax Liberation Day, will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Applebee's Park on North Broadway.
