A man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound made his way to Garden Springs Elementary on Monday evening, where people who were still at the school called for help.
Police have determined that the man shot himself earlier in a dugout in a baseball field behind the school.
School spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said no students were in harm's way, as it occurred "long after dismissal." Public school staffers were on-site Monday evening to ensure the grounds are ready for students on Tuesday.
The man, who is from Lexington but has not been identified by police, showed up at the school at 5:53 p.m., said Lt. Scott Blakely of Lexington police.
