Lexington police were searching for a Fayette County jail inmate they said was accidently released Thursday morning.
Brian Christopher Sims, 23, was arrested Thursday morning on charges of possession of a handgun by a felon and fleeing and evading police. Sims was released about 5:30 a.m. Thursday during the booking process, Lexington Police Sgt. Ann Gutierrez said.
Fayette County jail spokesman Capt. Darin Kelly said Sims' release was an officer error. The department will continue to investigate how the mistake was made.
"We book about 26,500 individuals a year," Kelly said. "This has happened before. It's rare, but it happens occasionally. It's human error. You can't prevent human error."

A corrections officer could be reprimanded if the investigation reveals that the officer violated any procedures, Kelly said.
Police described Sims as a black male, 6 feet tall and 210 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
