The Georgetown City Council passed an ordinance Monday night that permits golf carts on some public roads.
The ordinance, read for the first time on Feb. 9, requires that carts be operated only on roads with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less and within 5 miles of a golf course. The carts must also be inspected by the city, and only drivers with a valid license will be permitted to use the carts.
Last year the state gave local governments permission to authorize and regulate the operation of golf carts on public roadways under their jurisdiction.
