The bookkeeper for the Breathitt County sheriff was arrested after being charged with theft. The charges were brought following a state audit that revealed that she and the sheriff were overpaid in 2007.
A sheriff's deputy arrested bookkeeper Kimberly Carpenter on Saturday, charging her with theft of $9,455, the same amount that a state auditor's report listed as missing in taxes paid to her office.
The sheriff, Ray Clemons, has paid back what he owed, said County Attorney Brendon Miller.
It was unclear on Wednesday whether Carpenter had been released on bond.
