A fire destroyed one house and severely damaged two others Thursday morning at East Third Street and Nelson Avenue.
A family was temporarily displaced from a fourth home that sustained exterior damage.
Fire crews received a call at 5:42 a.m. Thursday of a house fire in the 300 block of Nelson Avenue. When they arrived, firefighters discovered that the blaze had also spread to the two neighboring houses, Lexington Battalion Chief Marshall Griggs said.
A portion of Nelson Avenue was closed while firefighters worked.
"It certainly made for an interesting morning," he said.
The houses were about 61/2 feet away from one another, which could have contributed to the spread of the fire, Griggs said.
Firefighters had contained the fire by 6:15 a.m. The house from which the fire seemed to originate was destroyed.
None of the houses on fire appeared to be occupied, Griggs said. Two were under construction, and one was padlocked.
The house at 317 Nelson Ave. had some exterior damage from the fire. The family who lives there will be displaced for a day or two, Griggs said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
