The pool at Suffoletta Family Aquatic Center in Georgetown has opened after being closed this season for work to make it compliant with a federal pool safety law.
Aquatics recreation manager Terri Wilkerson said wet, cloudy days since the pool opened Saturday might have deterred some folks. But many were eager to return to the colorful outdoor recreation center.
"We're just weather-dependent at this point," Wilkerson said. "I think the community is really responding, though."
The aquatic center is open from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6:30 p.m. Sunday. It will be open only on weekends after Aug. 9 through Labor Day. It closes after Labor Day.
The pool typically opens around Memorial Day, but this year's opening was delayed while it came into compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
The law, which took effect in December, requires that all public pools and spas have safety covers over drains to prevent children and others from being trapped by suction.
