A Nicholasville man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a first-degree robbery charge in Jessamine District Court.
Jeffrey L. Wethington, 19, was charged Monday after an armed robbery was reported at Hot Spots Tanning Salon on Southview Drive, Nicholasville police said.
A clerk told police that a man was in the business looking at their movie rentals when she went into a room. The man followed her, put her in headlock and put a knife to her throat.
The man demanded to know where the money was and told the clerk to get it. The employee and the man got into a struggle and she was able to knock the knife from his hand. When he attempted to pick it up, she was able to get free, open the door and yell for help.
The man fled on foot from the business and was last seen heading for Derby Ridge Apartments at 320 Southview Drive.
A description of the man led police to his door. There they found Wethington and arrested him, police said.
Wethington is scheduled to return to district court on Sept. 8 for a preliminary hearing. He remains in the Jessamine County jail in lieu of a $5,000 cash bond.
