Journalists to discuss coverage of Pitino sex scandal

Three leading Kentucky journalists will discuss on Monday how they broke the story of a woman who allegedly attempted to extort University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino after the two had a sexual encounter, which she claimed was rape.

The story presented journalists with a variety of thorny ethical questions, such as when to name Karen Sypher, the woman who allegedly extorted Pitino and who alleged that Pitino raped her. Officials declined to prosecute Pitino for rape but are pursuing extortion charges against Sypher.

Lexington Herald-Leader sports columnist Mark Story; The (Louisville) Courier-Journal courts reporter Andrew Wolfson; and Candyce Clifft, reporter and anchor for FOX 41 in Louisville, will explain their actions and take questions from the audience at 7 p.m. Monday in the auditorium of the University of Kentucky William T. Young Library.

The free forum is sponsored by the Bluegrass Pro and University of Kentucky chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists.
