Take a bough: a list of area Christmas tree farms

Traditionally, the weekend after Thanksgiving is prime time for hunting down and setting up the family Christmas tree.

Visitors to area tree farms have several options. Choose and cut your own (saws are usually provided), pick from trees already cut, or take home a balled and burlapped variety to plant in your yard after the holidays. Also, many farms offer wreaths, swags and refreshments.

Clark County

Kovalic Christmas Tree Farm, 487 Ecton Road, Winchester. Choose-and-cut white and Scotch pine, Canaan fir and Norway spruce. Saws provided. Live (replantable) white and red pine; concolor and Canaan fir; Norway, white and blue spruce. Prices start at $25. Wreaths, roping and swags available. 11 a.m.-dark Mon.-Sat., 1 p.m.-dark Sun. Yuletide Tree Farm and Nursery, 3925 Old Boonesboro Road, Winchester. Pre-cut or you-cut Scotch and white pine. Balled and burlapped white pine, and blue and Norway spruce. Christmas Memories Tree Farm, 4890 Keene Road (Ky. 1267). Choose and cut white and Scotch pine, and Douglas fir, $35-$85. Saws provided. 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sat., 2-5:30 p.m. Sun. Dec. 5-6, 12-13. Garrard County

Cathole Bend Plantation Christmas Tree Farm, 1243 Cathole Bend Road, Lancaster. You-cut Norway spruce and white pine up to 9 feet tall, $14-$100. Open 9 a.m.-dark weekends through Dec. 21; weekdays by appointment only. Take U.S. 27 south to Ky. 52 in Lancaster, turn west toward Danville and go 0.8 mile. Turn south on Ky. 1150 (old Danville Road) and go 2.8 miles to the bridge across Dix River. Don't cross the bridge. Drive straight down Cathole Bend Road; the road ends at the farm. (859) 985-7044.

Madison County

Baldwin Farm, 1113 Tates Creek Road, Richmond. You-cut Norway, blue and white spruce and white pine (bow saw provided) or they'll cut for you. Balled and burlapped trees available starting at $49. $40 for trees as tall as 8 feet, $10 a foot for each additional foot for all trees grown on the farm. Pre-cut Fraser firs available; prices vary.
