United Way of the Bluegrass is emphasizing a new campaign, urging donors to give $5 with the goal of generating $100,000 through online donations.
Calls to the United Way 2-1-1 line, which helps connect those in need with a range of social services, show the need, communications director David Kitchen said.
The line received 15,396 calls in the first three quarters of 2009, nearly as many as all of last year.
Donations to the Give5 campaign will stay in the community, Kitchen said.
