House bill reader dies at 63

The man who read bills for the Kentucky House of Representatives for 31 years died Thursday.

Richard "Butch" Stewart died at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington Thursday night. He was 63.

Mr. Stewart grew up in Frankfort, but left to attend Eastern Kentucky University. After college, he became a licensed funeral director and embalmer for Rogers Funeral Home. In 1979, he assumed the role of reading clerk for the Kentucky House of Representatives, but maintained his position as funeral director and embalmer.

He was a member of the Frankfort Elks Lodge No. 530.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Darlene Stewart, his brother, Bob Stewart and his mother, Mildred Stewart.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rogers Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
