An 86-year-old man from Hazard died after his truck plunged into the Kentucky River Tuesday and was submerged for 24 hours.
Jessie Young was traveling on Highway 451 in the Yerkes community when his truck left the road and landed in the river, Perry County Chief Deputy Tony Eversole said.
Eversole said two witnesses who had been traveling behind Young called out to him before his Ford Ranger was submerged, but that Young had responded that he "would be all right."
The truck then submerged and witnesses lost sight of it.
Young's body, which was still in the driver's seat, was recovered about 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Perry County Sheriff's department is investigating.
