Almost 600 college kids -- and that's every one that started -- made it to the end of the fifth annual DanceBlue Dance Marathon held Friday and Saturday at University of Kentucky's Memorial Coliseum.
To their endurance, add generosity.
Representing 120 organizations, the dancers raised $636,639 for the Golden Matrix Fund. The fund benefits cancer research, children with cancer and their families at the UK Pediatric Oncology Clinic.
The marathon, which featured a top-of-the-hour choreographed line-dance every hour, never allowed for any dancer to sit or sleep. That, said UK spokeswoman Katy Bennett, deterred not a single dancer.
"They're sitting now," Bennett said 15 minutes after the marathon was over Saturday night.
This year's total breaks last year's fund-raising record of $600,889. Adding all previous totals together, the DanceBlue event has raised $2,027,220 for pediatric oncology efforts on campus.
