Man pleads not guilty to wanton murder in New Circle crash

Adam T. Leake pleaded not guilty Thursday to wanton murder in the Jan. 19 death of Connie S. Layne in Fayette Circuit Court.

Leake was driving the wrong way with his headlights off about 11:30 p.m. on New Circle Road when his vehicle collided with a car driven by Layne, 40, of Lexington, according to police. Layne died at the scene.

Leake, who was indicted by a grand jury earlier this month, also pleaded not guilty Thursday to two counts of fourth-degree assault and one count of driving under the influence.

Police said Leake's car sideswiped a car driven by Kelley Medley, 32, of Lexington, before colliding with Layne's vehicle on the inner loop of New Circle Road. The impact of the crash sent parts of Leake's car into outer loop lanes, where they hit a car driven by Chelsea Oliver, 24, of Lexington, police said.

A pre-trial conference in Leake's case was set for May 20; a status-hearing was set for June 4.
