Derby Day forecast calls for lots of rain

80 percent chance of storms for Derby Day

With an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms Saturday, weather for the Kentucky Derby probably will be far from perfect, National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Szappanos said.

Umbrellas are not permitted at Churchill Downs.

Periods of heavy rain are likely from late Friday night through Sunday, a weather service report said Thursday. The report predicts up to 3 inches of rainfall — up to 5 inches in some areas.

Starting Friday, the weather service will issue a flood warning that should last until Sunday, Szappanos said.

The Kentucky Oaks forecast is mostly sunny, with highs in the low 80s.
