Man charged with manslaughter after fatal crash in Harlan

Kentucky State Police have charged an Ohio man with manslaughter after a fatal wreck in Harlan County.

Matthew Merriman, 27, of Payne, Ohio, was driving on Ky. 522 in the Rosspoint community when he lost control. His vehicle ran off the road and overturned, according to a news release.

A passenger, Janie Simpson, 50, of Loyall, was thrown from the vehicle and died. She was not wearing a seat belt, state police said.

Police were called to the wreck at 12:06 a.m. Friday.

Police charged Merriman with first-degree manslaughter, two counts of wanton endangerment, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and driving on a suspended license.
