Lex-care: Help with utility bill, car repairs will put families on their feet

Jill Jensen, a social worker at the Fayette County Primary Care Center, is working with a married couple who need $179.28 to pay their electric bill. The husband receives disability benefits. The wife was working until she injured her back and can no longer work. The loss of her income has made it difficult to pay their bills. She has been declared eligible to receive disability benefits retroactive for two years. When her disability benefits start, the family will be able to maintain their household without difficulty.

Sabina Massey, a case manager at Bryan Station Family Resource Center, is counseling a family of five who needs $211.08 to repair their car. The wife is disabled and unable to work. The husband is a seasonal employee with Parks and Recreation. The car is used to transport the wife to medical appointments and the husband to temporary jobs during the winter. High utility bills have depleted their savings. Once the husband returns to work, the family will be able to manage.
