A former Fayette County Detention Center corrections officer who was arrested in late April on theft and misconduct charges was indicted Monday by a grand jury.
Police say Justin Crawford stole $538 from an inmate's wallet on April 3, an action they say was an abuse of his position. Less than a week before Crawford's arrest on April 28, he was fired from his job at the jail.
Crawford's arraignment is set for July 23 in Fayette Circuit Court.
Crawford was part of a lawsuit settled in 2008 that paid him and more than 300 other jail employees $1.15 million after they claimed the local government violated labor laws by not paying them overtime and depriving them of meal and rest breaks.
Crawford filed another lawsuit claiming he had faced retaliation for his role in the earlier suit. A jury ruled April 15 that no adverse employment actions had been taken against Crawford, but a decision was not made about whether he was the victim of retaliation.
