Woman accused of stealing from Lexington church pleads not guilty

A woman accused of stealing more than $115,000 from a Lexington church's day care program pleaded not guilty in Fayette Circuit Court Friday.

Marcie S. King, 39, is charged with unlawful taking of more than $300 and four counts of theft by failure to make required disposition of property more than $300.

According to court documents, King is accused of stealing $115,083 from Southern Hills United Methodist Church, where she was employed as a financial manager, over 2 1/2 years beginning in November 2006.

More than 2,000 pages of discovery were submitted to attorneys at the arraignment.

"Someone investigated this very thoroughly," said Derek Gordon, King's attorney. "So we'll have to jump into defending it just as vigorously."

King will go to court for a status hearing scheduled Sept. 17.
