Lexington Fire Department firefighters started the cleanup after fighting an early morning fire at the East Side 1 Stop Shop at the corner of East 4th and Race streets. One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion. Race Street was closed for part of the morning.

Traffic on Race Street might be affected Wednesday as fire crews continue to monitor a business that was damaged in an early morning fire.

Just before 6 a.m., someone called in a report of heavy smoke inside the East Side 1 Stop Shop at 401 Race Street.

"There was significant smoke," battalion chief Marshall Griggs said. "There was almost zero visibility inside it."

Griggs said firefighters were at the scene within two minutes of receiving the call and had the fire out within 15 minutes, confining most fire damage to the rear of the building.

One firefighter suffered minor heat exhaustion and was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Griggs said investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire.
