Lexington government seeks suggestions for new street's name

Lexington's Newtown Pike Extension is nearing completion, and it needs a name. Since city regulations will not allow the road to be called Newtown Pike Extension, city council member Tom Blues, whose district includes the new road, suggested the city have a naming contest.

Submit your ideas on the city's Web site by Aug. 18 by going to and clicking on "Newtown Extension - Name it." You may also vote on a paper form available in public libraries and in the lobby of the Government Center, 200 East Main Street.

The Web site, which includes naming guidelines, will begin accepting entries at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

A committee appointed by Blues and Mayor Jim Newberry will choose the finalists by Aug. 20.

The winner will be chosen Aug. 27 by a vote of the community, again using paper ballots or online. The first phase of the road will be finished in time for the opening of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games on Sept. 25.
