Students and faculty were evacuated from Mary Todd Elementary School in Lexington on Friday while fire crews investigated a smell of smoke in the building.
The evacuation lasted about 10 minutes. Students were then taken back into the building because of lightning in the area and kept in the gymnasium for another 15 minutes, Major Ken Ridge said.
Fire investigators found no sign of fire, he said.
Fayette County public schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said the fire department was called about 1:15 p.m. after a passing storm caused lights to flicker and someone reported smelling smoke.

Deffendall said letters would be sent to families to let them know about the incident. Mary Todd Elementary has just under 400 students enrolled, she said.
