A Grant County deputy sheriff shot and killed a Williamstown man early Monday after the man stabbed the deputy multiple times, Kentucky State Police said.
James Edward Staton IV, 35, stabbed Deputy Kevin Burke, 31, multiple times as the officer attempted to serve a warrant about 2 a.m. Monday, state police said.
After a short foot pursuit, Staton pulled out a knife and stabbed Burke, who has been in law enforcement for nine years. Staton died at the scene after Burke shot him on Humes Ridge Road in Grant County.
Burke, who has been with the Grant County sheriff's department for three years, was taken to the University of Cincinnati Hospital. He was in stable condition Monday afternoon, state police said.
