A new, 2 1/2-mile trail in Lexington's Shillito Park is now open, according to a release from Mayor Jim Newberry's office.
The $1 million for the trail came from local, state and federal sources, the release said.
Recreation seekers have 23 miles of trails to choose from around the city, but an additional 16 1/2 miles of trails are already funded and in the design phase. Nearly $20 million has been allotted to the next phase of construction, according to the release.
The Shillito Park trail isn't the only one opening this month. Eight miles of the Legacy Trail, which begins near the Northside YMCA and runs to the Kentucky Horse Park, will open Sept. 12.
