A man and woman who lived at the house told police that there were awakened by a loud crash. When they went to the living room to investigate, they found that the front door had been forced open, and they were confronted by a black man wearing a bandanna to obscure his face.
The man was armed with a handgun and demanded money. The couple distracted him and then escaped through a window.
At that point, Abdullah emerged from a room where he had been sleeping and was confronted by the man in the kitchen. The man demanded money, and when Abdullah said he didn't know what the suspect was talking about, the man shot Abdullah in the leg.
The man threatened to shoot Abdullah again, and Abdullah directed him to another room. When the man went into that room, Abdullah fled. He later told police that there was no money in the other room.
The couple who fled earlier called police from a nearby business. When police arrived, the man and Abdullah were gone. About an hour later, police found Abdullah near the Country Hearth Inn. He was taken to Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for the gunshot wound. He was later transferred to a Lexington hospital.
Abdullah told police that he had recently received a Social Security settlement, which may have led the man to believe there was money at the house.
Police say they are looking for the man who broke into the house.
