After Years of Silence, 'Kingdom Hearts 4' Finally Reveals New Gameplay at Nintendo Direct
The June Nintendo Direct was full of announcements, some were expected due to recent leaks from infamous leaker NatetheHate, but one of the biggest surprises was the announcement of Kingdom Hearts 4 for Nintendo Switch 2, with the first trailer for the game since 2022.
Revealed during the June Nintendo Direct livestream, the roughly 90 second trailer gave fans a new look at the main Tokyo-inspired setting, Quadratum, as well as first looks at the new models for Donald Duck, Goofy, and several other characters.
The trailer begins with an Organization 13 cloaked female character narrating about physical forms of darkness manifesting. We then get a look at Sora using the keychain from his keyblade to get into the air to fight Darkside.
Afterwards, there is a quick montage of characters, some of which appear to be Final Fantasy characters. One of them is sporting the same outfit as Noctis from Final Fantasy 15. There is also a glimpse at what appears to be Yozora from the Kingdom Hearts 3 ReMind DLC or Riku (it's difficult to tell from the angle and new art style).
Then the trailer cuts to gameplay, demonstrating an evolution of Kingdom Hearts 3's combat system. Keyblades appear to have multiple unique abilities attached to them. The new Build system seems to let players create environmental hazards with attacks and then destroy them, creating combos.
The reaction commands from Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3 also make a return.
Finally, we get a glimpse of the fight between Sora and Darkside, with the game's more realistic art style spotlighted; human NPCs are there, and Sora is proportioned more like an actual human.
The trailer ends with the confirmation that Kingdom Hearts 4 will be available at launch on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 with no announced release date.
