GoodGiving Guide Challenge reaches $1 million mark for donations to area nonprofits

The GoodGiving Guide Challenge on Wednesday exceeded its 2013 goal of raising $1 million for Lexington-area nonprofits, according to a news release.

An online-focused way to raise money for local nonprofits, the challenge kicked off Nov. 1 and concludes Dec. 31. It is a partnership between the Blue Grass Community Foundation and Smiley Pete Publishing.

This year, 108 nonprofits are participating, and the challenge now includes nonprofits in Fayette, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Franklin, Madison, Scott and Woodford counties. According to, 3,365 people have donated a total of $1,002,485.

From 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m Thursday, nonprofits will receive matching funds toward a new or existing nonprofit endowment at Blue Grass Community Foundation for the benefit of each qualifying nonprofit. Donors on Thursday will be matched 50 cents on the dollar on gifts of up to $5,000 per donor, per nonprofit, for a maximum match of $2,500 per donor, per nonprofit, on a first-come, first-matched basis. Donors may contribute to as many nonprofits as they choose. There is a $100,000 pool of matching funds available.

In 2011, 58 nonprofits participated in the GoodGiving Guide Challenge, and more than $200,000 was raised. Last year, $586,000 was raised for 68 nonprofits.
