Small Business Saturday, when everyone is encouraged to shop at local merchants, is this weekend.
Central Kentucky has scores of locally owned businesses and many will offer special deals, events and refreshments Saturday.
In Chevy Chase, just a small sample of events during the day includes free carriage rides from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and the Lexington Catholic choir caroling 4 to 6 p.m.
At The Morris Book Shop, the Kentucky for Kentucky group will have a pop-up sample sale of "Kick-Ass Kentucky" merchandise at 3 p.m.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit The Best of Flowers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adelé will have its annual stocking sale, where you can draw your own discount for up to 25 percent off. Worlds Apart will give away pashminas (while they last) with any purchase of $20 or more.

■ The Pomegranate warehouse sale is Wednesday through Dec. 10 at 951 Floyd Drive. Merchandise will include University of Kentucky Tervis tumblers, UK mugs and UK Plaid products, plus holiday items and quilted bags. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
■ The Shops at Lexington Center holiday open house is 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Activities will include a visit with Santa Claus from 2 to 5:30 p.m., and holiday music by Jan Hill from 4 to 5 p.m. and Rahab's Rope from 6 to 8 p.m. From 3 to 5 p.m., children's arts and crafts will be offered. The Kidney Health Alliance of Kentucky Vendor Fair is 4 to 8 p.m.
Merchants will offer special deals, and, while supplies last, free poinsettias will be given to shoppers with $100 or more of combined receipts from The Shops' stores. Three-hour free parking will be available with merchant validation.
■ More than 35 local vendors will be at the Burchfield's Vendors Christmas Party Open House to benefit Special Olympics Kentucky. It's 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 102 Mallard Court in Nicholasville, at Equestrian Woods Estates.
■ In Midway, merchants will provide refreshments to shoppers throughout the day Saturday. Santa arrives by an R.J. Corman train to visit from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Midway Auction Co. The day will include children's art activities, cookies by Midway School Bakery and a model train display. Canned food or a cash donation for the Midway Food Pantry are appreciated.
■ Janice's at the Saltbox will host its annual Holidays on High Street open houses every Tuesday in December. There will be refreshments and free gift wrapping. The store, 859 East High Street, carries handmade German Christmas ornaments from Inge-Glas.
■ North Limestone merchants will host the Holiday Limelights Festival during business hours Saturday, with refreshments, door prizes, children's activities and discounts. Participating merchants are Bella Bliss, The Crushed Violet, Merit Furniture, Mithril Jewelers, Mulberry & Lime and Third Street Stuff.
■ The Collective in Chevy Chase will host a Jingle & Mingle open house party from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The store is at 314 South Ashland Avenue.
