If all you want for Christmas is a coat once owned by Judy Garland or a fitted red evening dress worn by Mick Jagger's ex Jerry Hall, then you might want to attend the opening of Balatro Vintage, a vintage couture boutique on the second floor of Dudley Square.

The store's opening preview is 7 to 10:30 p.m. Friday. Items will be available for a limited time, with the store opening only through mid-February. "We've decided to do it more like a pop-up shop," owner Bobby Freisberg said.

He said his mother started collecting couture about 30 years ago. "She's been buying ever since and putting them away," he said. "And then we also do buy at auction."

There's also a Balatro Vintage in Palm Beach, Fla., and a planned partnership with a vintage shop in London.

Labels on fashions on racks in the airy space read like a couture who's-who: Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Chloé, Dior. There are furs, iconic Chanel jackets and exquisite dresses. A few items have storied pasts, including that custom-made coat owned by Garland and Hall's fitted red gown.

Now, it's mostly women's clothing, but jewelry will be added, Friedberg said. He plans to open the shop again the week before Keeneland's April meet.

"And then of course we'll have hats for Keeneland and scarves, and we always carry a selection of vintage Louis Vuitton trunks," he said.

During Friday's event, refreshments from Sabío, the restaurant on the first floor of Dudley Square, at Maxwell and Mill Streets, will be served.

The store will be open afternoons Thursday through Saturday and by appointment. Call (859) 252-0200.
