When it comes to purchasing a gift, choosing a locally made product makes it a little more special. And just in time for the holidays, three new stores offer a selection of jewelry, books, knitted accessories, food and more from area artisans.

MADE KY and The Kids Korner opened in August at 903 Manchester Street, No. 180, Lexington.

The space includes a studio and a corner for children's activities, but mostly it's retail. You'll find Candy Corn and Sock Monkey hats by Katie Haag, jewelry by Dancin' Dog Designs, pottery, ceramic works, wood cutting boards and more.

Sticks, Stones & Stitches, an Appalachian craft store, opened in September at 91 South Main Street, Stanton.

All merchandise is handmade by local artisans. Items are $10 to $150 and include woven rush stools, Swedish door harps, jewelry, clocks, soaps and lotion, knitted shawls, scarves, hats and more.

■ The Holiday Market at the Kentucky Market Pavilion opened in October at 2914 East Ky. 60, Owingsville. You'll find a mix of local foods and crafts including meats from the Chop Shop and Browning Farms, and cheeses from Boone Creek Creamery.

Handmade crafts include folk art, jewelry, wood items, photographs, original oils and prints.

The grand opening of the new wing at Fayette Mall is Friday. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is at 10 a.m. at the new mall entrance of the middle wing near The Cheesecake Factory. There will be special guests, activities and giveaways all day. Santa will arrive at 5 p.m. with Olive the Reindeer. Stores in the new wing are H&M, Altar'd State, Janie and Jack, Jos. A. Bank, Vera Bradley, Swarovski, L'Occitane, Aveda, Clark's, Oakley, Eddie Bauer and Zales.

■ The Versailles Merchant Association Christmas Open House is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in downtown Versailles. The event will feature photos with Santa on Saturday, free carriage rides Sunday, a $500 gift basket giveaway, refreshments, sales and door prizes.

Car-Go Collection gift shop at Clean Sweep Car Wash, 550 South Broadway, will host its annual holiday open house from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Bring a box of baby wipes to be donated to All God's Children and get 20 percent off one item. If you spend $25 or more, sign up for a prize worth $100. Hot cider and refreshments will be served.

Lucia's World Emporium's Holiday Fiesta continues through Sunday at the store's new location, 328 North Ashland Avenue. Merchandise is 15 percent off storewide, and fair-trade tastings will be served.

■ The annual L.V. Harkness Holiday Open House runs through Saturday at 531 and 525 West Short Street. Events include a visit from Santa, 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday; hand engraving with Dennis Meade, Friday and Saturday; and an ornament signing by John Morris on Friday.
