And speaking of shopping ... Friday is Luminate Lexington, with the annual lighting of the city's Christmas tree at Triangle Park, and downtown stores will join the celebration.
The Shops at Lexington Center will kick off the season with their annual Holiday Open House on Friday.
Activities from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. will include live music, children's crafts and a visit from Santa Claus from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Ballerinas from Bluegrass Youth Ballet's Nutcracker will be at The Toy Shop from 4 to 6 p.m.

Shoppers who make purchases of $100 or more from The Shops from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. will receive a free poinsettia while supplies last.

The weekend continues with Small Business Saturday, a nationwide event to encourage the support of local businesses.
■ Here in Lexington, Lucia's World Emporium will celebrate its eighth anniversary with 15 percent off everything in the store Friday and Saturday.
Items include fair trade clothing, jewelry, gifts and accessories. There will be a gift basket and gift card giveaway, and coffee and chocolate tasting. The store recently opened at its new location, 328 North Ashland Avenue.
■ The Chevy Chase Holiday Open House is 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The day will include discounts, refreshments, carolers and a visit from Santa. Free carriage rides begin at 4:30 p.m. in front of John's New Classic Shoes, 316 South Ashland Avenue.
■ Boxwood Antiques at 840 Winchester Road will host a holiday open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday with wine and cheese.
■ Midway will host its annual Christmas Open House on Saturday. Downtown events will include Santa arriving by R.J. Corman train at 11 a.m., cookies from Midway School Bakery and crafts by the Midway Merchants Association. Downtown businesses will have treats and extended shopping hours.
