Within a span of three weeks this spring, Rynetta Davis, an English professor at the University of Kentucky, was quoted in the Wall Street Journal and then the New York Times.
It was not literary know-how the journalists were seeking, but Davis' thoughts on the fate of a popular retailer that inspired the name of her blog, Jcrewismyfavstore.blogspot.com.
"It was such a big surprise, but unfortunately it was because J. Crew has had so much bad press lately," said Davis of the attention from the national news.
The company, adored by many a stylish shopper (including First Lady Michelle Obama) for its fashionable clothing and accessories for men, women and children, has stumbled as of late. Sales have lagged and staff has been cut.
Davis discovered the store in the mid to late 90s.
"That's really when the obsession began," she said. "When I moved to Atlanta as an undergrad there was a J. Crew at the Lenox Mall."
The cut of the garments are a good fit for Davis, and she's a fan of the clothing's fun graphic prints. "Typically my outfits are 100 percent J. Crew and my closet is 99.9 percent J. Crew," she said.
When modeling outfits for her blog, Davis sprinkles in a few pieces from other retailers such as Kate Spade, Loft and Tory Burch.
But her heart belongs to J. Crew and the blog will stay loyal to the brand. "I'm a little nervous," she said, of the changes taking place in the company. "I'm hoping that the designs don't change drastically because I love what I see now."
What she wore
Jacket: Chambray schoolboy blazer with contrasting striped cuffs from J. Crew. The versatile piece is a plus when it comes to dressing for teaching classes.
"Sometimes I'll wear jeans with a blazer, just depending on where we are in the semester," she said. "Most often I do just sort of dress the way that I am today."
Top: Ivory-colored lace shell from Loft
Pants: J. Crew Reese pants in a graphic peony print.
Shoes: Kate Spade mint-colored, pointed-toe flats. "I think they elongate your legs," said Davis.
Eyeglasses: From Pearle Vision
Favorite products: Philosophy body wash and Lush Dream Cream, a hand and body lotion.
Hair: Chic short 'do styled by MaChon Fogle at Hairapy By MaChon, a Lexington salon.
Necklace: Multi-strand pearls from J. Crew. "It was actually, interestingly enough, my first J. Crew jewelry purchase, maybe six or seven years ago."
