Chef Jake Southworth opens Circa 1840 in Georgetown

Jake Southworth and the owners of Galvan's Sports Bar in Georgetown have taken over the former 222 Restaurant on North Broadway in Georgetown.

The new restaurant, Circa 1840, reflects the Napa Valley style of cooking Southworth mastered while a chef at the Bounty Hunter restaurant at Robert Mondavi Winery in California. When Bounty Hunter was changed to a wine bar, Southworth returned home to Kentucky.

Southworth got his start in Lexington at Dudley's, where he was trained by chefs John Foster and Ouita Michel. He has worked at several Lexington spots, and when 222 became available, it was the perfect opportunity, he said.

The restaurant serves entrees with a choice of soup, salad or sweet. "We throw in dessert for a kicker," he said.

Dinner is served from 4 to 11 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and brunch is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Call (502) 570-8597.

Grey Goose opens on Jefferson St.

If you need an escape on Christmas night, check out Keith Clark's new place. The Grey Goose, 170 Jefferson Street, serves "from scratch" pizzas, burgers and bar fare. Twenty-five years ago, Clark co-founded Cheapside Bar and was co-owner with Robin Campbell for 22 years. Clark has struck out on his own with "something I always wanted to do," he said.

Clark has revamped the building that once housed Ballard's Market, and he calls his new spot "a neighborhood gathering place."

The Grey Goose will open at 8 p.m. Christmas Day, and you don't have to have reservations for the New Year's Eve party next week. Regular hours are 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. daily. Call (859) 233-1500.

Choose your New Year's Eve eatery

If you plan to celebrate the New Year by watching the Times Square melee on TV, you might want to have an early dinner. Here are some places offering dinner specials, and some that are ringing in the New Year at midnight.

■ Bluegrass Hospitality Group's restaurants are offering choices for your year-end celebration. Malone's locations will serve a four-course prix fixe menu for $49.95, and Sal's Chophouse will have a three-course prix fixe dinner for $39.95. At Malone's Banquets, upstairs at Sal's, a filet mignon buffet is $29.95. The restaurants will begin serving at 4 p.m.

Drake's will be the spot to ring in the New Year. The party starts at 8 p.m. It's $5 for general admission, $75 for bar seating, $100 for table seating.

■ Natasha's Bistro and Bar, 112 Esplanade, (859) 259-2754. Early seating at 6 p.m. is $59 a couple; the second seating at 8:30 p.m. is $99 a couple. A New Year's countdown and dance party will be 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.

■ Natural Bridge State Resort Park at Slade, (606) 663-2214, http://parks.ky.gov. The dinner buffet, $16.95, features roasted prime rib, rock Cornish hen, tortellini Alfredo and fried catfish. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m.

■ Wines on Vine, 400 Old Vine Street, (859) 243-0017. A four-course dinner, $45, features Asian dumplings with a miso dipping sauce, minestrone soup or house salad, choice of beef bourguinon, chicken Braciole or creole mahi mahi, and dessert.

Happenings in Louisville

If your New Year's Eve plans include an upscale night out, you might want to head to the Louisville area.

■ At Corbett's: An American Place 5050 Norton Healthcare Boulevard in Old Brownsboro Crossing, executive chef Chris Howerton will serve a seven-course dinner. Seatings are at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. The cost is $100. Call (502) 327-5058 or go to www.corbettsrestaurant.com.

■ Proof on Main, 702 West Main Street, in the 21c Hotel, offers a prix fixe dinner menu, dance party and brunch for partygoers. Cost is $121.21. Admission to the atrium party is $31, or $21 when accompanied by a gift card for $10 or more to Kroger or Thornton's, which will be donated to the Center for Women and Families. The regular a la carte menu will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

New Year's Day brunch will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The menu includes bison pastrami hash with poached egg, truffle oil and artisan toast, and lemon ricotta pancakes with whipped cream and simmered local blueberries.
