New owner brings new ideas to Wine + Market

Renee Brewer left Lexington after graduating from the University of Kentucky to study international wine marketing and management in Europe. She then worked for a Napa Valley winery, and a public relations firm that handled wine, and when she came back home she landed at Wine + Market, 486 West Second Street, at Jefferson Street.

When owners Krim Boughalem and his wife, Andrea Sims, were ready to sell the shop, Brewer was ready to buy it. "When the opportunity arose here at Wine + Market, I just couldn't say no," she said.

New ownership means a new approach to the business.

"We'll be adding to the specialty foods selection, bringing in an assortment of pastries and more locally/ regionally produced goods. On the wine side of things, Wine + Market will soon have an expanded and competitively priced wine selection, and I'll be bringing in more fine spirits and fortified wines. In addition to our regular Friday night wine tastings (from 5 to 8 p.m.), Wine + Market will host specialty tastings, private events and wine clubs," Brewer said.

A grand opening party will be Dec. 9 and 10. Call (859) 225-0755.

Three years in the making

Smith-Berry Vineyard and Winery will release its limited edition 2008 Kentucky cabernet sauvignon during a holiday open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Chuck Smith, co-owner and winemaker, bought cabernet sauvignon grapes from a grower in Millersburg three years ago and began creating the signature Smith-Berry wine. It was aged in French oak barrels for 26 months, then bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Eighteen Smith-Berry wines, plus Chuck's Bar-B-Que and Mary's country ham and biscuits, will be served, along with samples of Kenny's Farmhouse cheese and Morgan's Fudge. Call (502) 845-7091 or go to Smithberrywinery.com. The winery is at 855 Drennon Road in New Castle.
