Community space at Oliva Bella

Oliva Bella is opening space at its new tasting room for community gatherings.

"We want it to be a place where people come for great food, great camaraderie, and to interact with one another over food and drink," co-owner Lea Ann Vessels said.

The first Community Table, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, will feature author Nikky Finney, winner of the National Book Award for her book of poetry Head Off and Split. Finney will read from her book and will hold an interactive conversation with Marta Miranda on the meaning of community and the importance of building it. Tickets are $15 and include a selection of Italian antipasti prepared by Chef Lisa Laufer.

Akielo No. 128 Daughters of the Nile Pageantry Dance Unit will have its annual pancake breakfast with Santa on Saturday at Oleika Shrine Center, 326 Southland Drive. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children younger than 10. Tickets can be bought at the door.

Hanna's on Lime, 214 South Limestone, will serve its annual pre-holiday dinner Wednesday. The menu features turkey, dressing, gravy and fresh cranberries, plus one side for $7.95. Underdogs Bar & Grill, 805 North Broadway, is having a grand opening party at 4 p.m. Sunday, and offering samples of pork, chicken, turkey, brisket, ribs, and sausages — straight from the giant smoker.
