In the five years since the Kentucky Proud Incredible Food Show has brought celebrity chefs to Lexington, this year's stars just might have more fans than all of the others.

The Deen Brothers have published four cookbooks together and Bobby Deen's cookbook From Mama's Table to Mine debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list. In September, Jamie Deen will release a new cookbook entitled, Jamie Deen's Good Food.

This year's marketplace will include more than 120 local food-based companies as well as a Kentucky wineries area, Restaurant Row, Kid's Craft Café, and the Quick Tips Booth.

Tickets go on sale June 7 at the Lexington Center Ticket Office, and all Ticketmaster Outlets. Go to or call (859) 233-4567 Ext.3255.

Bourbon barrel leftovers

Tony Davis has found his calling with leftovers from Kentucky's bourbon industry.

Davis, owner of Studio 300, crafts kitchen cutting boards from reclaimed bourbon barrel wood that features the original stamp from the distilleries as well as remnants of the barrel's char on the back sides.

His newest creation is a lazy Susan called the Bourbon Derby. The base is made from Blantons Bourbon barrels, and each one has eight bottle toppers from Blantons Bourbon bottles, which spell the name Blantons. The creator of Blantons Bourbon, Elmer T. Lee, is pictured on the Bourbon Derby barrel head with his signature.

"This handcrafted piece was created to symbolize the iconic creator Elmer T. Lee and to pay homage to the first single barrel bourbon created," Davis said.

The lazy Susan costs $179 and will be at Liquor Barn stores at 1837 Plaudit Place and 2005 Versailles Road on Friday. Call Davis at (859) 621-5261.

In the judge's booth

Two of Kentucky's top chefs, Jeremy Ashby of Lexington and Edward Lee of Louisville, are among the judges chosen for Savor Nashville's Challenge to the Chefs.

Ashby and Lee will join Jonathan Waxman, chef/owner of Barbuto in Manhattan's West Village; Robbie Wilson, chef at Mattei's Tavern in Los Olivos, Calif.; and Jeff Michaud, chef/owner of Osteria Restaurant and Amis Restaurant in Philadelphia.

Ashby is executive chef and partner at Azur Restaurant in Beaumont Centre. He's accustomed to being on the other side of a competition.

"This is the largest event I have judged in my career. Sometimes I am happy, but often dumbstruck with a judge's evaluation of my dishes. I plan on offering plenty of feedback to the competitors and will look for personality in their dishes," Ashby said.

Lee, chef at 610 Magnolia, is a James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef in the Southeast, and has been featured on Iron Chef America and Top Chef.

Nashville chefs will compete in the cook-off from 7 to 9 p.m. April 12 at Union Station Hotel, 1001 Broadway. Tickets are $35. A celebrity chef dinner will be at 8 p.m. April 13 at Hutton Hotel, 1808 West End Avenue. Tickets are $160. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. Go to
