One of your most important fashion accessories can be your eyes, and going into the fall, edgy, kohl-rimmed looks are giving way to softer shapes and rich metallic colors.

Instead of just lining eyes in dark shades all around, sweep color out and up from top lashes for a delicate winglike look. Or along the lower lashes, apply a fun sparkly shade, maybe a light blue or purple, to make eyes pop.

Fall runway makeup at 3.1 Philip Lim and Chanel featured models wearing noticeable color around their eyes, with bold cat-eyes in metallic blues and greens.

Using something besides black or brown to line your eyes calls for a steady hand. When shopping for easy-to-use eyeliners that will stay put, search for products that are creamy, for a smooth application, and choose shades with a bit of a shine for an of-the-moment look.

Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner from Stila, $22 at Sephora, includes shades of turquoise and violet blue with a sponge-tip applicator. And Liquiline Blast Eyeliner from Cover Girl ($8 at drugstores), available in vibrant Green Glow and Blue Boom, features a built-in smudger for softening lines.

With all that drama going on around the eyes, it's best to keep lip color a subtle pink or nude. Anything bolder would appear harsh next to the vibrant hues already on the face.
