Former longtime Kentucky official Laurel True dies

Laurel True, a long-time advocate for public health and education, died Saturday at his home in Shelby County. He was 80.

Mr. True, who was married to Alice Stivers True for 57 years, was born in Newtown in Scott County and began serving in state government in 1959. He was appointed the first secretary of the Department of Human Resources and was involved with the creation of Medicaid in Kentucky and the Appalachian Regional Hospital system.

In retirement, Mr. True continued as an advocate for health, education and human services. He is also a former trustee of Georgetown College, his alma mater, and a Marine Corps veteran.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Julian Guthrie True of Frankfort and two granddaughters.

Visitation for Mr. True will be 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Baptist Church, in Frankfort, where he was a deacon. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
