Skating season in downtown Lexington arrives Friday when the Unified Trust Co. Ice Rink at Triangle Park opens for its second year.
Renee Jackson, president of Downtown Lexington Corp., which works with the rink, said the rink would be open seven days a week, with longer hours on the weekends and when Fayette County schools are closed.
In 2011, its first year, the rink opened in mid-November and closed at the end of January. This season, it is scheduled to close Jan. 16.
That means the rink is opening a week after 2012's last Thursday Night Live, which Downtown Lexington Corp. also organizes.
Despite the quick transition, the weather has been unseasonably appropriate.
"It's hard to imagine that last week we had our last Thursday Night Live and it was 80 degrees, and this week we have the opening of the ice rink and it's freezing," Jackson said.
The ice rink, she said, has been a welcome addition to downtown holiday activities.
"It gives people something to do, and it's different. It's family-oriented, and people are looking for something like that to do as we approach the holidays."
The rink is 85 feet by 60 feet and can accommodate nearly 200 skaters at a time. Jackson said about 22,000 people skated during the inaugural season, with an additional 65,000 people watching or accompanying the skaters.
