Later this year, the Kentucky Junior Miss Program will begin presenting the Athena Award, an international award that honors people who help women achieve professional excellence.
The award will be presented in Lexington on Nov. 2 to a man or woman who has achieved excellence in a business or profession, has served the community and has helped women attain professional goals and leadership skills.

It was first presented in 1982 in Lansing, Mich., and has since honored more than 5,000 people.
