Gordon Garrett, associate state director and management consultant of the Kentucky Small Business Development Center, has been certified as a technology business consultant by the Association of Small Business Development Centers. Garrett is one of only 22 SBDC-certified consultants nationwide. He joined the KSBDC in 2006 and has since consulted with 94 small businesses, helping them to secure more than $12 million in capital.

Dr. Duncan Peters of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington has been awarded certification by the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology. The society is composed of equine veterinarians dedicated to a comprehensive program of advanced education in the field of equine lameness and osteoarticular, musculotendinous and nervous pathology, covering the different parts of the locomotor system of the horse. Certification requires a veterinarian to be in equine practice for a minimum of five years and complete a continuing education protocol of lectures and practical training laboratories.

Melissa Poynter, owner of Poynter Realtors, has been named 2008 Realtor of the Year by the Lexington-Bluegrass Association of Realtors. Billy Smith, a Realtor with Gibson Co., has been named the 2008 Commercial Realtor of the Year. Gerry Whalen, a broker with Whalen & Co., has received the association's 2008 Good Neighbor Award.

Larry R. Rhodes of Lexington has received the 2008 American Institute of Professional Geologists Martin Van Couvering Memorial Award. Rhodes is a registered professional geologist in Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri and Illinois. He has served two terms as the institute's Kentucky Section president and has also served as vice president, secretary-treasurer, newsletter editor, awards chairman, membership chairman and screening board chairman. He is chief geologist for FRA Engineers, a T.Y. Lin International Company.
