Horse betting down again in January

Betting on horse racing continued to slide in January, according to numbers released Wednesday by Equibase.

Wagering for the month on Thoroughbred races in the U.S. was down 1.56 percent to just under $1.043 billion despite an increase in the number of race days.

Race days were up 8.05 percent to 376, while purses were up 3.46 percent to almost $70.7 million. This follows a $1 billion drop last year in Thoroughbred betting.
