Because of the possibility of significant changes at the Detroit Three, Toyota's manufacturing plant in Georgetown has been accelerating its purchase of key parts from a handful of suppliers, spokesman Rick Hesterberg said Tuesday.
"It's impossible to make predictions of what's going to happen in this industry," he said.
The plant has taken the steps because many of its suppliers also sell parts to the Detroit Three, of which General Motors and Chrysler are surviving on government loans.
Of the Toyota plant's 500 North American parts suppliers, about 60 percent also provide materials to the Detroit Three, he said.
