A Pittsburgh-based limestone company has laid off 43 employees since last month at its underground mine and lime plant in Pendleton County in Northern Kentucky.
The Carmeuse Lime & Stone facility near Butler laid off 34 workers at the beginning of April and cut nine more this month, said Philip Johnson, senior vice president of sales and marketing.
The plant, called the Black River Kentucky facility, produces lime that is used for industrial applications in businesses such as the steel industry, "which has been devastated this year," Johnson said.
"We have hung on as long as we could, but we needed to react to reduce our production capacity," he said. "We've got a number of customers who just aren't taking any product right now."

The plant is continuing to operate but at a lower capacity.
Going forward, it will employ about 160, said Carroll Laufmann, vice president of operations.
