Lexington GE plant to lay off 43

GE's Lexington Lamp plant announced this week that it will lay off 43 hourly workers, effective Sept. 28.

The plant, at 1801 Edison Drive, employs 143 hourly workers and 11 salaried.

GE spokeswoman Janice Fraser said the layoffs are prompted by declining demand for the plant's automotive and specialty incandescent lights. She said plant production is down by 35 percent this year, with production days cut from 225 to 150.

Fraser said the number of involuntary layoffs is expected to be reduced by special early retirement and voluntary layoff programs.

GE previously announced it would close a separate plant on Loudon Avenue by July 2010.
