Betting on Thoroughbred racing was down only slightly last month, but that continues the overall downturn that has pari-mutuel wagering down more than 10 percent year-to-date, according to figures released Sunday by Equibase.
About $883 million was wagered in September, down 0.86 percent versus the same month last year.
For the year, betting is down 10.22 percent to $9.65 billion. Purses were down 6 percent for the month, to $97.5 million, despite slightly more race days.
