Wagering in November got a boost from the Breeders' Cup. Betting on U.S. Thoroughbred racing was up 0.69 percent for the month, thanks to $144.6 million wagered on the championships, which were in October last year.
Year-to-date numbers tell a different story: betting is down 10.01 percent, to $11.6 billion, according to monthly figures released Friday by Equibase.
Likewise, purses were up almost 25 percent in November to $104.3 million, thanks to $26 million in Breeders' Cup purses, but down 5.76 percent to $1.04 billion year-to-date.
